You are to observe candidates undertake 3 roll-plays that define emergency situations where Care for the Unconscious is required. Observations are to be recorded on the assessor checklist provided below by placing a Tick (✔️) in the appropriate box (example: ✔️ YES or ✔️ NO.) Feedback/Comments are to be used when the candidate is deemed NYC to explain why.

You will be required to provide each student with the three scenarios, ensure you list them below. Students must demonstrate competency in all the checklist items listed below to be deemed competent in this assessment task.

Using Automated External Defibrillator (AED) - Use in Scenario 3

• Ensure casualty is lying on back.

• Turn on the AED and follow the voice or displayed commands

• Move any clothing out of the way of the casualty’s chest

• If the casualty is wet or sweaty, remove any moisture with a dry towel before placing pads

• Attach one pad to the casualty’s upper right chest, and the other to the casualty’s lower left chest – these positions will be labelled on the pads (see diagram)

o Avoid placing pads over any implantable devices – pads should be placed at least 8cm from any such devices.

o Do not place pads over medication patches – remove the patches before continuing as these can block the current and cause burns to the casualty

• If not already attached, plug the wires from the pads into the unit (most units will already have this ready for use)

• If the AED determines that a shock is needed, move everyone away from the casualty. Make sure you are not touching the casualty and press the ‘Shock’ button, and then let the AED reanalyse.

• Follow the instructions of the AED – at this point you may be instructed to commence CPR (do not remove the pads), or the AED unit may otherwise instruct you that another shock is necessary.

• Continue CPR and AED until the ambulance arrives

Assessment Questions

Assessor to ask the student: What information is to be presented in a report and when should it be written?

Answer: All information relating to the care and CPR given to the casualty should be included in the report and it should be written as soon after the incident as possible.

Answer: Speak to a clinical expert.

Answer: The critical incident may have a psychological impact.

Answer: To evaluate the critical incident and improve future responses. Also, the rescuer may need the opportunity speak about any possible impact. And is there anywhere we can improve on?
