Identify hazards to health and safety of self and others in all three scenarios
Minimise immediate risk to health and safety of self, casualty and others by isolating any hazard(s)
Approach the casualty in a calm, culturally aware, sensitive and respectful manner

Check / Clear Airway – places casualty in the recovery position
Check for breathing (Look, Listen &Feel)
Locate the casualty’s sternum
Demonstrate 30 chest compressions at 1/3rd chest depth
Demonstrate 2 breaths
Repeat 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths for 5 consecutive cycles.
Change over operators (rescuers) with minimal interruption to CPR.
• Ensure casualty is lying on back.
• Turn on the AED and follow the voice or displayed commands
• Move any clothing out of the way of the casualty’s chest
• If the casualty is wet or sweaty, remove any moisture with a dry towel before placing pads
• Attach one pad to the casualty’s upper right chest, and the other to the casualty’s lower left chest – these positions will be labelled on the pads (see diagram)
o Avoids placing pads over any implantable devices or jewellery
o Avoids placing pads over medication patches – remove the patches before continuing as these can block the current and cause burns to the casualty
• If not already attached, plug the wires from the pads into the unit (most units will already have this ready for use)
• Follow the prompts and press the shock button if appropriate
• Continue to follow the instructions of the AED – at this point you may be instructed to commence CPR (do not remove the pads)
• Continue CPR and follow instructions of the AED until the scenario is concluded by the assessor

ASSESSMENT TASK 3 - PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT - ASSESSOR CHECKLIST
Identify assess and minimise hazards in the situation that may pose a risk of injury or illness to self, casualty and others in accordance with occupational health and safety requirements
Maintain infection control procedures and utilise personal protective equipment.
Calmly reassure and provide information to reassure casualty, adopting a communication style to match the casualty’s level of consciousness and communication skills.
Assess casualty and identify injuries, illnesses and conditions
Seek first aid assistance from others and/or ambulance support according to relevant circumstances using appropriate communication media and equipment in a timely manner.
Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible
Determine and explain the nature of casualty’s injury/condition and relevant first aid procedures to provide comfort
Seek consent from casualty prior to applying first aid management
Lean the casualty forward
In the case of an infant place the casualty in a steep head down position
Apply five (5) back blows checking after each one if the blockage has been dislodged.
Uses saline and gauze to gently clean the wound from most central outward using one piece of gauze only once.
Applied a clean nonstick pad over the wound and secure
Applied a donut bandage or similar to enable indirect pressure and support of an imbedded object
Applied pressure bandage to effected area
Apply a second bandage from the distal point of the limb working toward the torso
Ensure the bandage is not too tight by communicating with the casualty regarding their comfort level. Check capillary return by squeezing the casualty’s nail bed.
Marks the bite site and records the time
Immobilise the limb using a splint
Elevate and immobilise the arm using sling.
Use a soft pad to catch blood
Pinch below the bridge of the nose and maintain pressure for 10 minutes
Applied ice to appropriate area
NOTE: student must either use props and verbal explain that the procedure would be 10 mins on and 10 mins off.
Provide first aid management in accordance with established first aid principles and Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines and/or State/Territory regulations, legislation and policies and industry requirements
Correctly operate first aid equipment as required for first aid management according to manufacturer/supplier’s instructions and local policies and/or procedures
Use safe manual handling techniques as required
Monitor casualty's condition and respond in accordance with effective first aid principles and procedures
Finalise casualty management according to casualty’s needs and first aid principles
Accurately convey assessment of casualty’s condition and management activities to ambulance services /other emergency services/relieving personnel
Prepare reports as appropriate in a timely manner, presenting all relevant facts according to established procedures
NOTE: The student will be required to complete this report once their assessment is completed and submit the report prior to the end of the session.
Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with privacy principles and statutory and/or organisation policies

Seek consent from casualty, caregiver or emergency services prior to applying first aid management if appropriate.
Seek the child’s management plan if available.
Provide first aid management in accordance with established first aid principles and Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines and/or State/Territory regulations, legislation and policies and industry requirements
Use available resources and equipment to make the casualty as comfortable as possible
Seek first aid assistance from others and/or ambulance support according to relevant circumstances using appropriate communication media and equipment in a timely manner.
Lie the casualty down or have them sit with their legs outstretched
Have the casualty resting in a comfortable position
Adrenaline auto-injector is located and brought to the casualty
Used by date, fluid window and instructions are located on the autoinjector and checked.
Injection site on the casualty’s upper outer thigh is located and checked for any obstructions
Autoinjector is administered in upper outer thigh and held in place for 3 seconds (student is to demonstrate using the trainer autoinjector)
Used autoinjector is kept to one side to hand off to emergency service personnel upon handover of the casualty.
Notes time of administration
Locates and identifies the child’s asthma inhaler and spacer if available
Usedby date is checked and noted
Cap is removed from inhaler and spacer if not already and devices are checked for any dust and debris in chamber
Inhaler is fitted to spacer correctly
Administers 1 puff and instructs the casualty to take 4 breaths
Repeats 1 puff to 4 breaths 4 times
Correctly operates shock blanket as required for first aid management according to manufacturer/supplier’s instructions and local policies and/or procedures
Use safe manual handling techniques as required
(example: moving the casualty, recovery position etc…)
Monitor casualty's condition and respond in accordance with effective first aid principles and procedures
An ambulance officer has approached you and requires a verbal hand-over report.
Answer: Accurately convey assessment of casualty’s condition and management activities to ambulance services /other emergency services/relieving personnel
Prepare reports as appropriate in a timely manner, presenting all relevant facts according to established procedures
NOTE: The student will be required to complete this report once their assessment is completed and submit the report prior to the end of the session.
Maintain confidentiality of records and information in line with privacy principles and statutory and/or organisation policies
Identifying the casualty’s illness or injury through history, signs and symptoms
Using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required
Providing appropriate first aid treatment
Conveying incident details to emergency services or advising casualty on any required post incident action
Reviewing the incident
